The Groove Club: Honouring the Beauty of Classical Dance Bharatanatyam by Mr. Atharva Choudhary
Some traditions are learned. Others are felt, through stillness, rhythm and the quiet discipline of the body in motion. Bharatanatyam: Honouring the Beauty of Classical Dance unfolded as such an experience, inviting students to step into one of Indiaβs most profound classical art forms with mindfulness and respect.
Held by The Groove Club at the Seminar Hall, ICACS Building, the workshop offered a thoughtfully curated introduction to Bharatanatyam, designed for beginners as well as enthusiasts eager to reconnect with classical expression. The session created a space where technique met tradition, and movement became a form of storytelling.
The workshop was led by Atharva Choudhary, Choreographer and Classical Dance Practitioner, who guided participants through the foundational vocabulary of Bharatanatyam with clarity and sensitivity. Emphasis was placed on understanding posture and alignment as the roots of balance and grace, while basic adavus introduced students to the rhythmic framework that defines the classical form.
As the session progressed, students explored the relationship between rhythm and movement, discovering how precision gives rise to fluidity. A deeper engagement with expression allowed participants to experience abhinaya, where emotion, narrative and gesture merge to convey meaning beyond words.
A defining moment of the workshop was the learning of a short shlokam, offering insight into the spiritual and poetic dimensions of Bharatanatyam. This exercise highlighted how classical dance carries within it devotion, discipline and centuries of cultural memory.
For Indira University, this immersive experience reflected an ongoing commitment to nurturing cultural literacy and artistic exploration. By creating platforms that honour classical traditions while welcoming new learners, the University continues to encourage a deeper engagement with Indiaβs rich artistic heritage.
Bharatanatyam: Honouring the Beauty of Classical Dance became a moment of connection, where students discovered how tradition lives on through attentive practice, rhythm and expression.
